As the third-largest film production centre in North America, Vancouver has clearly earned its moniker, “Hollywood North.” Just minutes from downtown, the City of North Vancouver, with its own stunning film backdrop and all the required production services and facilities such as film studios, digital media and sound studios, is also a popular filming locale.
The City recognizes the appeal and economic benefit of the film industry to the local community. To protect the interests of its residents and businesses, the City works with citizens and the film industry to ensure that a balanced, safe and respectful relationship exists between both parties while supporting and providing services for feature films, TV series, commercials, movies of the week and TV pilots.
The Shipyards District is an area that has recently undergone a remarkable revitalization into a vibrant urban waterfront neighbourhood. This picturesque community once taken up by a heavy shipbuilding industry, is now flourishing with new shops, restaurants, breweries, services and public amenities along with wide-open gathering spaces. Unobstructed views of the water and Vancouver’s stunning skyline, soaring North Shore mountains, and industrial landscapes are paired with parks and greenways, making for a diverse selection of film settings. The combination of new urban buildings and turn-of-the-century historic commercial spaces bring together the past, present and future in a single backdrop. There are unique locales like The Shipyards which includes the 40-foot-wide, 700-foot-long Burrard Dry Dock Pier and public promenade, the 85-foot floating St. Roch Dock, large and small vessel moorage spaces, Shipbuilders’ Square, The Pipe Shop, Lonsdale Quay Market, Shipyard Commons and the striking, inside and out, ultra-modern Polygon Gallery.

As a thank you to the neighbourhood for allowing the film work to occur, the production is encouraged to make a donation to the Lower Lonsdale BIA Beautification Fund. This allows the whole area to benefit from the street cleaning, planters and hanging baskets that will be in part paid for by film productions.
